Joseph van Cleef, the only Dutch Jew of St Martin Vésubie

Before the Marche de la Mémoire last year, in September 2015, Herman Vuijsje presented the story of Joseph van Cleef, the only Dutch Jew who lived St Martin Vésubie, at a conference in the village’s excellent Médiathèque (library).

Joseph, originally from Amsterdam, worked in Brussels but fled to Nice when the Germans invaded Belgium in 1940. From Nice he came to St Martin Vésubie.

Vuijsje, sociologist and journalist, told us about Joseph van Cleef’s life and how he himself could identify with van Cleef.

Read the article by Vuijsje, developing the theme of his talk about Joseph van Cleef.

      – Written and published in Yiddish in 1946, the original text gives voice to an imaginary last survivor of the ghetto of Warsaw before its definitive destruction by the Nazis.
      – Modelled on the biblical book of Job, the text is both a desperate prayer and a devout curse to a God who is unable to avoid the systematic extermination of the sons of Israel.
      – The reciting voice Yossl Rakover is a hymn to the heroic resistance of men who, beyond human limits, were able to prove their dignity and faith which challenges God and tries to find a reason for the suffering of innocents like the ghetto’s children.
