After the Marche de la Mémoire on Sunday 6 September 2020. a ceremony was held in the village by the monuments to the Jews and Righteous Among the Nations here in 1943.
One survivor was present, Sabine née Rosenfeld, who by chance was visiting here on the day of the Marche to show her family where she lived before having to flee. At the ceremony she talked about her time here during the War.
The municipality kindly made an excellent video of the ceremony.
When Herr Klaus-Peter Schaal learnt that his house is in the former garden of Pauline Langnas—who during the War was arrested in St Martin Vésubie and deported to Auschwitz—he set out to research her story. Herr Schaal is deacon in the Catholic Church and lives in suburban Berlin.
The 2020 Marche de la Mémoire will take place on Sunday 6 September, at the Col de Cerise. From the French side, this is accessed from le Boréon, St Martin Vésubie; from the Italian side, via the Terme di Valdieri in Italy.
With the arrival of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, it is difficult to predict the situation even as far ahead as September. As it may not be easy to attend, especially for those coming from far away, we need also to consider an on-line alternative for those who cannot be physically present.
The Marche de la Mémoire, as it is called in France, or Attraverso la Memoria as it is called in Italy, commemorates the September 1943 flight of the Jews of St Martin Vésubie into Italy and their story.
With as many as 18 books! Histories, autobiographies / biographies and novels. And also , films, TV and radio…
We also have an excellent review, written especially for this site by Eliane Markowski McKee, of the novel A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell (2005), in which St Martin Vésubie in 1943 plays an important role. Eliane describes how the book helped her discover her mother’s story.
